Marianne Alvarez created the first swim team in Vancouver for swimmers with a disability. She volunteers 100% of her time because she believes that persons with disabilities should have the same access as any other athlete. From the very beginning there has been a constant struggle, 1) Funding 2) Regular pool access 3) Dealing with ableism, sexism, and xenophobia. Despite all of this she coached a swimmer all the way to finals in the London 2012 Paralympics. At the same time she works three other jobs and is a full-time mother and wife.
